What is Linux?
A very popular version of the Unix operating system that runs
on a variety of hardware platforms including x86, Itanium,
PowerPC and IBM's entire product line. Linux is widely used as
a server OS and is gaining ground in the desktop market.

Linux Is Open Source
Linux is the most popular open source operating system. Its
source code is available free of charge; however, for a fee,
Linux is distributed with technical support and training from
commercial vendors such as Red Hat Software (www.redhat.com)
and Novell (www.novell.com). A Linux "distribution" is
available as a download or on CD or DVD media, which may
comprise from a handful to several hundred applications,
tools and utilities. Source code for the Linux kernel as well
as the auxiliary programs may also be included.

Linux Uses X Window
Linux employs the X Window rendering system for displaying
data on screen. X Window provides the basic window creation,
but relies on third-party user interfaces to provide the
window borders and buttons, menus, icons and desktop that
users see and manipulate. KDE and GNOME are two of the most
popular (see KDE and GNOME). A Linux distribution may include
more than one user interface, all of which appear somewhat
similar to the Windows and Mac graphical interfaces.

From Minix to Linux
In 1990, Finnish computer science student Linus Torvalds
turned Minix, a popular classroom teaching tool, into Linux,
which is closer to the real Unix. Torvalds created the kernel,
most of the supporting applications and utilities came
from the GNU project of the Free Software Foundation. Many
programmers have contributed to the Linux/GNU system. For
more information, visit www.linux.com.

It's Really "Lee-Nooks"
As for the pronunciation of the word, if you lived in Finland,
you would say "lee-nooks," because Linus is pronounced
"lee-noose." Since the English pronunciation of Linus is
"line-iss," many call it "line-icks." More common is
"lynn-icks," which splits the difference. No matter how you
say it, Linux has become very popular.
